Below is a ready-made route suggestion for a tour of the Finnish countryside. There is much to see and experience at our locations and in the surrounding regions. Because you cannot see everything in one day, we recommend you stay in one location for at least two days. This way you will also have time to relax!
All the farms on this route are located by a lake as are all the closest, most interesting cities/towns mentioned in the text. After all, Finland is not called the land of thousands of lakes for nothing!
Example route "The Three Province Tour"
Starts and finishes in Helsinki. The first day’s drive is about 170km and the last day’s about 190km. On other days you will need to drive about 80-130 km per day between locations.
There are several routes to choose form when driving from one location to the next. You can choose to drive along idyllic country roads, slightly bigger roads or highways. The above-mentioned distances have been calculated according to the straightest route.
If the first day’s drive seems too long, you can spend the first night in Helsinki at the Habitation apartments (H05973).
1st location: Maatilamatkailu Ala-Orvola in Vesilahti (6864)
Ala-Orvola is situated on a beautiful spot by a lake. A beach sauna and rowing boats are available to patrons. The farm’s rooms are really comfortable. You can easily make a day trip to Tampere which is only 35km away. Tampere is the largest inland city of the Nordic countries with a population of over 200 000. Tampere was founded in 1779 on the banks of the Tammerkoski Rapids (one of Finland’s official national scenic areas) and it evolved into the most highly industrialized locality in Finland during the 19th century. Thanks to new city planning, the former industrial areas such as Finlayson and Tampella are alive again: restaurants, shops, sport and fitness centres, Museum Centre Vapriikki and the Central Museum of Labour have found locations there. Tampere’s best-known building and its landmark is Näsinneula Observation Tower. Näsinneula is definitely a must see!
2nd location: Mäkelän lomatuvat in Ruovesi (6654)
Here too you can enjoy a beach sauna and row on the lake. Mäkelän lomatuvat is specialised in guided forest tours, "Trails through green gold" . At the end of a tour one can enjoy campfire coffee in a hill with beautiful view. From Mäkelän lomatuvat you can make a day trip to the lively centre of Ruovesi. In June-August you can take a steamboat cruise from the boat terminal at the Ruovesi guest marina. If you have more time on your hands, the Helvetinjärvi National Park - also in Ruovesi - is well worth a visit.
3rd location: Loma-Ässä in Petäjävesi (1602)
At Loma-Ässä you can acquaint yourself with the central Finnish landscape by hiking on the nature trails situated near the location and then finish the day with a sauna and swim. In Petäjävesi well worth a visit is Petäjävesi old wooden church, which is a Unesco World Heritage property. You can also make a day trip to Jyväskylä which is 35 km from the farm. A pleasant pedestrian street lined by numerous boutiques, gift shops, cafes and restaurants lies in the centre of Jyväskylä and adventurous types will find a mountain cross car track right near the city.
4th location: Matkailutila Lahdelma in Pertunmaa (5145)
At Matkailutila Lahdelma you stay in outbuilding flats that have all the creature comforts. You can spend the day rowing, having a sauna or why not take a horse carriage ride. From Matkailutila Lahdelma you can make a day trip to Mikkeli, which is 60km from the farm. In Mikkeli you can enjoy a cup of coffee in the market square and acquaint yourself with the Kenkävero tourist attraction. Kenkävero is Finland’s largest wooden vicarage, with history going back 550 years. It has been restored and is now an all-year-round tourist centre with 4-5 changing arts and crafts exhibitions a year, a crafts shop, a coffee house-restaurant, the Marthas’ heritage centre and a magnificent ecological garden.
Please note! On your way back to Helsinki, you could stop by Heinola. Heinola has a water tower that can be seen from almost anywhere in the city and which has a panorama café on the top floor.
The city of Lahti is also located along the return route. If you have time to stop in Lahti, explore the Sibelius Hall - which is Finland’s biggest wood building in a hundred years. Congress and Concert Centre Sibelius Hall was completed in 2000 right on the shores of Lake Vesijärvi.
